Why Might a Tooth Need to be Removed?
While the removal of a tooth is always a very last resort, there are situations where it might be recommended. Advanced periodontal disease, severe tooth decay, or the existence of chips or cracks that cannot be repaired are all situations that might call for an extraction. Some teeth require removal in advance of orthodontic treatment, or because they are poorly positioned in the mouth.
The Tooth Extraction Process
The very first step in the tooth extraction process is the administering of a local anesthetic to numb the tooth, jawbone, gums and surrounding area. Although you might feel some slight pressure during the procedure, you will remain completely pain-free and comfortable throughout the entire process. It is not uncommon to experience some mild discomfort after the tooth is removed and immediately after the freezing wears off. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are recommended at this time. Any swelling or bleeding you experience is usually very minimal. Your dentist will go over with you exactly what to expect.
