What are Wisdom Teeth?

Located in the very back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are the last and final set of molars to appear, usually between the ages of 17-30, although some people never get a set. For many people, wisdom teeth grow properly and no problems arise. For many others, however, problems occur and intervention is necessary to avoid more complications later on. Left untreated, problem wisdom teeth can eventually lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and occlusion problems, all of which can cause extreme pain and discomfort.

Why Might Wisdom Teeth be Removed?

  • Inadequate Space: Often, there is simply not enough room in the mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth properly, so they cannot grow correctly and become fully functional. This can cause severe pain, cavities, crowding of teeth, and gum infections.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: If wisdom teeth grow diagonally or horizontally because of inadequate space, they can become impacted, or completely stuck in a potentially harmful or undesirable position. Impacted wisdom teeth should always be treated in a timely fashion, or it could result in:
